The Administration for Native Americans (ANA) recently announced that it will award First Nations Oweesta Corporation (Oweesta) a Social and Economic Development Strategies (SEDS) grant for its Native Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) Sustainability Project. Native CDFIs provide critical financial products and services to members of tribal communities who want to further develop their financial skills, build assets, start or expand a small business, or become first-time homeowners. This two-year grant will provide direct funding to four emerging Native CDFIs and will help Oweesta support their efforts by providing them financial skills instructor training and customized technical assistance that will help them design and implement a financial education program and build organizational capacity. Oweesta will help each of the CDFIs apply to obtain CDFI certification through the U.S. Department of Treasury. Additionally, this grant will allow Oweesta to work with each group to develop a capitalization plan which will help them identify and secure resources needed to finance small business and housing and sustain their respective institutions. Through this project, participating CDFIs will also have a unique opportunity to come together as a peer group to exchange knowledge, best practices and other resources. Oweesta has had the privilege of working with each of the participating CDFIs since they embarked down this path to create institutions and programs that would help meet the economic needs of their communities. Those participating in the sustainability project include; Ysleta del Sur Pueblo and the Tigua Community Development Corporation (El Paso, TX), Chi Ishobak CDFI (Dowagiac, MI), First Ponca Financial (Lincoln, NE) and Crow Tribe Economic Development Department and Aps?alooke Revolving Loan Fund (Crow Agency, MT). ?We are pleased to have an opportunity to further assist these emerging CDFIs by providing training and technical assistance that will expand the services they are able to provide to their community members and help move them towards CDFI certification? said Jon Panamaroff, executive director and senior vice president of Oweesta. ?These organizations are truly making an impact by strengthening their local economies and reducing poverty in the communities they serve.? Oweesta (www.oweesta.org) is a national Native CDFI intermediary. With over ten years of experience, Oweesta helps build strong Native institutions and programs through professional services designed to build local capacity and provide tools for Native community development. Oweesta?s primary programs include 1) Capitalization of Native CDFIs and 2) Training, Technical Assistance and Consulting. You are cordially invited to the 3rd Annual Native CDFI Network Member Gathering to be held November 17, 2011, at the Hilton Minneapolis, Minnesota, from 1pm-4pm, immediately following the OFN Conference. This year?s theme, ?IMPACT in Practice, Funding, and Policy,? will address the increasing demands imposed on Native CDFIs to demonstrate their community impact. As the economy struggles to recover, funders are looking for more bang for their buck and policy makers are scrutinizing the validity of federal programs. It?s time to start developing and implementing strategies that will enable us to prove the value of our work.? We are pleased to have Friedman Associates show us how to put tracking systems into our everyday practice during the first segment of our meeting. By being able to quickly and efficiently report on our community impact, we not only open the doors to continued and more funding opportunities, we position ourselves as a strong advocate that can inform policy affecting our industry. During the second half of our meeting CFED, our valued partner, will present findings on the Native Entrepreneurship Investment Research Project and discuss how impact data can be used in our policy and advocacy efforts.? We know that the ability to show our impact is a critical element to ensure the long-term success of our individual organizations and keep the momentum of the Native CDFI movement going. We look forward to seeing you in Minneapolis in November.? Sincerely,? Robin Danner & Tanya Fiddler?
