CDFI Fund Completes Disbursement of Recovery
Act Grants in Record Time
September 1, 2009
CDFI-2009-44
CDFI Fund Announces Complete Disbursement of Recovery Act Grants for
Community Development
100 Percent of Program Funds Deployed in Record Time
WASHINGTON - U.S. Department of the Treasury's Community Development
Financial Institutions (CDFI Fund) announced today that in record time, and
exactly two months after awards were announced for community development
grants through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act), it
completely disbursed all $98 million to 59 Community Development Financial
Institutions (CDFIs) and 10 Native CDFIs. These Recovery Act awards were
made through the CDFI Program and Native American CDFI Assistance (NACA)
Program, and will support new lending that will assist in the economic
recovery of some of our nation's most vulnerable communities at a time when
they are facing many financial challenges. These funds will help generate
capital for small businesses, mortgage loans for homebuyers, and funding for
affordable housing projects and other facilities in communities across the
country.
"Moving quickly to support communities made particularly vulnerable by the
economic downturn has been the top priority for the CDFI Fund," said
Director Donna J. Gambrell. "This is a significant accomplishment for the
CDFI Fund that was achieved by utilizing new internal business practices
that enabled the disbursement of the Recovery Act resources faster than ever
before. These financial assistance awards are critical to getting these
community-based lenders the capital they need to provide distressed
communities they serve with the resources to stimulate local economic
recovery."
Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Director Donna Gambrell announced the
financial assistance awards to 59 Community Development Financial
Institutions (CDFIs) on June 29th, 2009, and the financial assistance awards
to 10 Native CDFIs were announced on July 1st, 2009. In order to expedite
the flow of Recovery Act resources, for the first time the legal agreements
between the CDFI Fund and the award recipients were ready the same day as
the announcement, which served to greatly accelerate the delivery of funds.
Today, 100 percent of the $98 million in awards to CDFIs through the
Recovery Act have been disbursed.
The awards are a part of the Obama Administration's efforts to invest
directly in communities and support community institutions across the
country that address a wide variety of economic development issues. These
investments are generating capital for first-time homebuyer loans, providing
investments in small businesses and microenterprises, and supporting the
development of affordable housing and community facilities across the
country. Additionally, many of the CDFIs that have received support are
engaged in innovative lending to support foreclosure prevention efforts,
encouraging entrepreneurs to launch small businesses, expanding bilingual
credit unions, and offering alternatives to payday and predatory lenders.

received awards.

Tomorrow most PBS stations will air two new specials that address
financial literacy issues.
First, Sesame Workshop will present "Families Stand Together: Feeling
Secure in Tough Times," a program designed to help families with young
children communicate during time of economic insecurity. The program is
hosted by Al Roker, Deborah Roberts, and Elmo; featuring our friend Jean

"Families Stand Together" will be followed by "Your Life, Your Money"
produced by Jump$tart national partner, WNED Buffalo/Toronto, and hosted
by Donald Faison, star of "Scrubs." Your Life, Your Money is aimed at
young adults who want to get their financial lives on track. It
features a number of financial experts, including our friends Michelle
Singletary (of Wisconsin) and Beth Kobliner.

Subject: [CircleUp] Register now for FIELD Webinar - Microenterprise and
Entrepreneurship Development Systems
Message-ID: <000001ca330b$b5032720$1f097560$@org>
Announcing the next Leading Edge Webinar - sponsored by Bank of America
FIELD is pleased to announce that the next in its series of Leading Edge
Webinars will be Microenterprise and Entrepreneurship Development Systems.
The fourth in a series funded by Bank of America and designed to feature new
strategies for the field, this Webinar will take place on Wednesday, Sept.
23, 2009 from 2:00 -3:30 p.m. (EDT).
register.
Entrepreneurship Development Systems (EDSs) have developed over the last
five years as strategic responses to the economic development challenges
facing rural America, and seek to build greater recognition and support for
entrepreneurship, leverage new investment, and achieve greater impact
through a more coordinated approach to entrepreneurial transformation.
Goals of the Webinar:
* To review the concept, components and principles of Entrepreneurship
Development Systems;
* To share the most important lessons learned in early
Entrepreneurship Development Systems that can be applied to create new
systems; and
* To share the perspectives of microenterprise practitioners who have
been active in building an EDS, and hear how these efforts benefit and
support their work with microentrepreneurs.
Guests:
* Mary Matthews, president, the Northeast Entrepreneur Fund, which
created the Greenstone Group, a 10-year initiative that seeks to foster a
culture of entrepreneurship and strengthen entrepreneurs in northeast
Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin through group-based learning, peer support
and access to a variety of business services;
* John Parker, president of Good Work in North Carolina, which was a
member of the North Carolina Rural Outreach Collaborative, an EDS funded by
the Kellogg Foundation, and which continues to work with the North Carolina
Rural Economic Development Center to support regional EDSs throughout the
state.
Format: This Webinar will summarize findings from an evaluation conducted by
FIELD of six Entrepreneurship Development Systems funded by the W.K. Kellogg
Foundation. It will focus on the role that microenterprise development
programs have played in these systems and the benefits that programs - and
their clients - gain from these strategies. It also will show how lessons
learned have been incorporated into systems work that has occurred after the
Kellogg demonstration.
Readers interested in learning more about Entrepreneurship Development
Systems can access FIELD's study at:
http://fieldus.org/Publications/EDS2008.html
When: Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. (EDT).
Cost: Free, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Bank of America.

Subject: [CircleUp] CFED Scorecard: South Dakota Receives "B" for Financial
Stability
Message-ID: <82182B01DBD600448F4C7D2631BA1BFE93E65E@SERVER1.fnoc.internal>
South Dakota Receives ?B? for Financial Stability
State Does Well in Assets and Income, Must Improve in
All Areas Related to Race and Policy Arena
WASHINGTON, DC ? South Dakota leads the nation in key assets and income measures, but must
address gender and race disparities that are holding residents back in housing and homeownership, small
business development and higher education according to a report released today by the Corporation for
Enterprise Development (CFED), a national economic nonprofit. The state earned a ?B? on the 2009?2010
Assets & Opportunity Scorecard, with South Dakota also performing well in education generally, but falling
behind in important health care measures.
CFED?s Assets & Opportunity Scorecard?online at scorecard.cfed.org?measures the financial security of
families in the United States by looking beyond just income to the whole picture of building ownership
and protecting against financial setbacks. The Scorecard ranks the 50 states and the District of Columbia on
58 performance measures in the areas of Financial Assets & Income, Businesses & Jobs, Housing &
Homeownership, Health Care and Education.
South Dakota ranks 1st in unemployment, 6th in bankruptcy and 10th in both asset poverty and extreme
asset poverty, earning an ?A? in Financial Assets & Income. The state?s education performance is also
strong, ranking 2nd in Head Start coverage, 6th in four?year college degree attainment by income and also
ranking in the top 10 in 8th?grade math and reading proficiency. However, with the state?s considerable
Native population, South Dakota has significant room for improvement in key measures in order to help
all its residents achieve surer financial footing. At a time when the nation?s housing market is unstable,
South Dakota ranks 51st in homeownership by gender and 50th in homeownership by race. Similar
disparities are evident in the Businesses & Jobs area: the state ranks 51st in minority business ownership
and 48th in women?owned business value. And while health insurance is a key safeguard against asset
depletion, the state ranks 48th in health insurance coverage by race and 49th in employers offering health
insurance.
?The Scorecard provides a broad picture of how families stand, and what it tells us is that many American
households were already very vulnerable economically going into this recession,? said CFED President
Andrea Levere. ?It also shows state by state what is being done to address these vulnerabilities, and while
many states are taking some action, in most cases they haven?t been putting a very strong commitment
into their efforts.?
The Scorecard also assesses states on the strength of its policies to help families build financial security. The
Scorecard includes a detailed look of state?by?state information on 12 policy priorities, as well as
information on 23 additional policies. Together, these policies provide a comprehensive picture of what
states can do to help residents build and protect assets.
The Scorecard notes that South Dakota?s policymakers have significant opportunities to support the
financial well?being of their constituents. To address South Dakota?s last?place rank for minority business
National Office ?? 1200 G St. NW, Suite 400 ?? Washington DC 20005 ?? Ph 202.408.9788 ?? Fx 202.408.9793 ?? www.cfed.org
ownership, the state should fund organizations like community development financial institutions, or
CDFIs, that provide technical assistance and loans to microenterprises. In order to reduce disparities in
health care coverage by race, the state should expand coverage for parents and childless adults, simplify
Children?s Health Insurance Program procedures and defray health insurance costs for small businesses or
their employees. Finally, South Dakota should match the deposits of those who save in a 529 college
savings account to increase college attainment for minorities and to reduce college education debt. Of the
12 policy priorities, South Dakota currently has taken action on three of them, with only one state policy
rated strong or very strong by the Scorecard.
?South Dakota?s overall score is quite encouraging at a ?B?. However, a visit to any one of the state?s eight
reservations tells an entirely different story?, stated Stewart Sarkozy?Banoczy, Vice?President and COO of
Oweesta, a national Native CDFI intermediary located in Rapid City, and a Scorecard State Partner.
?Digging deeper into the data, we find that in every area, across all measures, the state?s B rating does not
reflect how the minority population of South Dakota, which is predominately Native American, was
ranked. In fact South Dakota was ranked at the bottom in virtually every measure when applied to race.
We encourage South Dakota to adopt policies and support programs such as financial education that will
strengthen and protect the ability of all its residents, Native and non?Native, to build assets and create
wealth.?
Nationally, the Scorecard notes that even before the current recession, economic vulnerability was growing,
especially among low? and middle?income families. Among the findings:
? While U.S. households overall registered a 27% increase in net worth between 2004 and 2006,
median net worth fell over that period for the 40% of U.S. households earning less than $37,000 a
year.
? The number of individuals with employer?provided health?insurance fell sharply, to 60.9% from
63.2%, leaving more families vulnerable and financially unprepared for health emergencies.
? The median amount of revolving debt, including credit card debt, rose from $1,805 to $2,960
between 2006 and 2008, an increase of 64%.
? Slightly more than 12% of households live below the federal income poverty line, but nearly
double that amount (22.5%) are asset poor, meaning they have insufficient assets to keep them out
of poverty for three months in the event of job loss. Over 14% of American households are in
extreme asset poverty, meaning they have zero or negative net worth.
Top performers on the 2009?2010 Scorecard?those states that earned an overall ?A? in performance
measures?include Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Vermont,
Washington and Wyoming.

2009 Potlatch Fund Native Arts Grants
Native American art in the Northwest has always played a central role in
all facets of Tribal life. Artists are important educators and opinion
leaders in Tribal communities. Through art, people learn to imagine
other ways of seeing, doing, and interacting with each other and the
environment.
Twenty-seven grantees in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana are
receiving a total of $40,000 with funding from
* The Boeing Company
* The WK Kellogg Foundation (challenge grant)
* Supporters, like you, of our 2008 Gala

The Northwest's signature event to expand
philanthropy throughout Indian Country.
The Potlatch Fund Gala builds upon the giving tradition of the potlatch
by bringing together Tribal and grassroots Native leaders, foundation
and corporate representatives and our generous donors. In 2008, over 400
people joined us, including representation from over twenty-five
Northwest Tribes, and a surplus of over $85,000 was raised. The 2009
Gala promises to be our most successful yet, and we have set a
fundraising goal of a $100,000 for the event.
The Gala is a unique opportunity to enjoy and learn about Native
Culture, have fun and support our important work. Please join Potlatch
Fund as a special guest at the 2009 Annual Gala.

Volunteer of the Year Award
Potlatch Fund Executive Director Ken Gordon was honored to receive the
Mary Helen Moore 2009 Volunteer of the Year Award at the recent
Philanthropy Northwest Annual Conference.
This Award was given to Ken in recognition of his leadership in building
relationships between Philanthropy Northwest, its members and its Native
American and Alaskan Native partners. In presenting the Award to Ken
the incoming President of Philanthropy Northwest (PNW), Jeff Clarke from
the Rasmuson Foundation, made special note of Ken's involvement in the
planning of the PNWs last two conferences, his role in leading breakout
sessions on how foundations can work more effectively with Native
communities, and his role in facilitating direct connections between
funders and Native organizations through Reservation tours and through
funder's briefings. Mr Clarke also noted Ken's role in helping to track
giving to Native communities through the use of giving trend data.
In receiving the Award Ken Gordon said that it came as a complete
surprise. He also felt that he personally was undeserving of the Award
as he was carrying out Potlatch Fund's role of helping to both inspire
the Native tradition of giving and expanding philanthropy to Northwest
Indian Country. Ken did however note that non-profits and Tribes
provide essential social and other services, without which society would
crumble - and therefore and on their behalf he was humbled to accept the
Award.
Philanthropy Northwest has honored one of its members with the Volunteer
of the Year Award since the early 1980s. In 2004 the Award was named
after Mary Helen Moore after her sudden death. Ms Moore was a beloved
community leader, had had a career in corporate giving, had been a
pastor, and was also a prominent leader in the African American
community.
Potlatch Fund Annual Meeting
The Annual Meeting of the Potlatch Fund Board was held on September 8,
2009. At that meeting Shelley Hanson and Heather Johnson-Jock were
reappointed to serve three year terms.
The existing Board leaders were also reappointed to their respective
roles. These roles are:
* Jim Thomas - President
* Antone Minthorn - Vice President
* Meredith Parker - Secretary
* Chandra Hampson - Treasurer
* Kirby Jock - Officer at Large
Board President Jim Thomas noted the significant progress that Potlatch
Fund had made over the last year and noted also that the recent decision
to re-appoint Executive Director, Ken Gordon, for a further two year
term will give the organization needed stability over what is likely to
be a difficult time.
The Board also has three current vacancies due to the resignation of
members who have moved out of the area or have had to concentrate on
their own organizations. The Board is publicly calling for nominations
for these positions: Announcement

Date
Message-ID: <000001ca3df5$27026270$75072750$@org>
Oweesta would like to announce that the upcoming Native Enterprise &
Entrepreneurship Development Initiative training, previously scheduled for
October 7-9 has been postponed. The training has been rescheduled for
November 11-13, 2009 at the Mystic Lake Casino Hotel.
The NEED Initiative is based on a new model of community economic
development. Tailored for Native CDFIs and their partners, it provides
comprehensive training and technical assistance designed to assist Native
communities with developing effective enterprise and entrepreneurship
systems in their communities. The training addresses key areas of economic
development specific to Native communities, including community environment,
local entrepreneurship climate and policy, coaching, access to capital, and
entrepreneurship education. In addition to training, new participants will
have access to free technical assistance from Oweesta to help them develop
and implement the NEED model in their communities.
The three-day training will be held at the Mystic Lake Casino Hotel on
November 11-13, 2009 in Prior Lake, MN. Applications for participation are
now available and will be accepted through OCTOBER 9, 2009 (PLEASE NOTE
DEADLINE EXTENSION). The cost of the training is $75.00 per person but the
follow-up technical assistance is free of charge. Communities that
participate, as well as past NEED Initiative participants, will be offered
the opportunity to attend three subsequent online training sessions that
will focus more deeply on specific topics of the NEED model. For more
information or to obtain an application please visit
www.oweesta.org or contact Kaitlin Cramer at
kaitlin at oweesta.org or by calling (605)
342-3770.
Due to limited space and high demand, organizations will not be accepted
into the program and continue to receive ongoing customized technical
assistance unless they are committed to attend the training and progress
through the programmatic milestones as applied to their particular
organization and community.

Help OFN identify the industry leaders of tomorrow!
This year OFN celebrates its 25th annual Conference. We will mark the occasion on October 28th at the Opening Plenary of the 2009 Conference, when the industry?s early pioneers will take us back in time to learn and explore our industry?s history. But why stop there? We'll then invite some of the industry?s rising stars?those who will help create the next 25 years of history?to offer their observations on where we are today and where the industry is going.
Who are our future leaders? Who are those future leaders? Tell us who you think are the emerging industry leaders.
Leadership can be defined in many ways. Some of the experiences and attributes we are looking for in a future leader include:
* Is a current or former opportunity finance practitioner, funder, or investor who demonstrates a long-term commitment to opportunity finance.
* Demonstrates the ability to lead the industry through transformational change.
* Is able to build effective partnerships that benefit the industry as a whole.
* Possesses other qualities that make him/her a compelling leader that you and others will want to follow.
Send your suggestions along with an explanation of how the individual demonstrates the experience and attributes listed above to me at dfabiani at opportunityfinance.net. If you'd like to discuss, please call me at 202-250-5519.
To qualify for the group rate of $179 (single or double occupancy) plus state and local taxes, you must make your hotel reservations by October 2, 2009. Be sure to tell the reservation agent that you are with the Opportunity Finance Network Conference. To reserve a room, call 866.837.4148 or click here.

Treasury Awards $4.4 Million for Native Communities in
2009 Round of the Native American CDFI Assistance Program
CDFI Fund Director Gambrell Highlights Long-Term Commitment to Native Communities
Washington, DC - The U.S. Department of the Treasury?s Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund today announced $4.4 million in financial assistance awards to 10 CDFIs through the Native American CDFI Assistance (NACA) Program. The awards, which are being made with fiscal year (FY) 2009 appropriated dollars, are designed to encourage the creation and strengthening of certified CDFIs that primarily serve Native American, Alaskan Native, and Native Hawaiian communities. The awardees are located in eight states - Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
?The growth in Native CDFIs is a remarkable accomplishment and their increasing reach and impact within the Native Communities they serve have been tremendous,? said CDFI Fund Director Donna J. Gambrell. ?We are committed to working with Native CDFIs to increase economic opportunities and bring all Native Communities into the nation?s economic mainstream. I am confident that the CDFI Fund?s new five-year Native Initiatives Strategic Plan, which lays out our long-term, comprehensive strategy to overcoming the barriers to capital in Native Communities, will greatly advance these commitments.?
Further signaling the growing importance of the CDFI Fund?s Native Initiatives among policy makers, the Obama Administration?s FY 2010 budget formally requested funding for the Native Initiatives, marking the first time funding for this effort has been specifically included in a budget request to Congress.
This past July, the CDFI Fund announced $8 million in Recovery Act awards, and $3.3 million in Technical Assistance-only grants utilizing FY 2009 annual appropriations for the NACA Program. Today?s announcement completes this year?s round by awarding the remaining appropriated funds to the most highly rated applicants in a combined pool that included: 1) applicants that submitted applications in response to the supplemental Notice of Funds Availability (NOFA) published on April 28, 2009 in the Federal Register; and 2) applicants that applied under the initial FY 2009 NOFA published on October 1, 2008 but did not receive a Recovery Act award in the first funding announcement.
About the Native Initiatives
The CDFI Fund's Native Initiatives work to increase access to credit, capital, and financial services in communities by creating and expanding CDFIs primarily serving Native communities. This is achieved through two principle initiatives: 1) a funding program ? the NACA Program ? targeted to increasing the number and capacity of existing or new Native CDFIs, and 2) a complementary series of training programs, called ?Expanding Native Opportunities,? that seeks to foster the development of new Native CDFIs, strengthen the operational capacity of existing Native CDFIs, and guide Native CDFIs in the creation of important financial education and asset building programs for their communities.
Organizations funded under the NACA Program serve a wide range of Native Communities, and reflect a diversity of institutions in various stages of development - from organizations in the early planning stages of creating a CDFI, to tribal entities working to certify an existing lending program, to established CDFIs in need of further lending capacity.
For more information about these awards, or about the CDFI Fund and its programs, please visit the Fund's website at: http://www.cdfifund.gov.

Donna Gambrell

Message
from the Director
September 30, 2009
Message from CDFI Fund Director Donna J. Gambrell
September 30, 2009
Today, as the CDFI Fund concludes fiscal year (FY) 2009, we look back on
twelve months of unprecedented challenges and many great accomplishments.
When the national economy was faced with the most severe economic crisis
since the Great Depression, the CDFI Fund was still able to take significant
actions to increase support for CDFIs and CDEs serving distressed
communities. As the CDFI Fund begins a year-long series of 15th Anniversary
related events and initiatives, I am more confident than ever that the CDFI
Fund will be well positioned for another 15 years of growth and expansion in
the future.
When the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) passed on
February 17, 2009, the CDFI Fund was given an important role in supporting
the nation's economic recovery. Our inclusion in this historic piece of
legislation represented an acknowledgment by Congress and the Obama
Administration of our unique contribution to promoting economic
revitalization in the most underserved communities across our nation. The
speed and efficiency at which the CDFI Fund mobilized to implement the
Recovery Act provisions has been truly remarkable. For making these and
other accomplishments possible, I would like to take a moment to express my
heartfelt thanks to our hardworking staff. Without them, the
accomplishments of the last year would not have been possible.
It is rare to find such an extraordinary high level of commitment and
dedication to assisting underserved populations and communities among so
many people. It is rarer still to find an equally high level of talent and
ability among these same people. The staff of the CDFI Fund exemplifies
commitment to public service at a time when the President has called on all
of us to participate in our nation's recovery and renewal by actively
serving in our communities. This is why on September 23, 2009, the 15th
Anniversary of the CDFI Fund, there could be no more rewarding experience
than hosting a day of service, where the CDFI Fund staff volunteered to work
with four area non-profits that have benefitted from CDFI awards.
Our ability to swiftly implement the President's Recovery Act agenda and
provide resources for distressed communities during the economic crisis did
not go unrecognized. Upon release of our implementation plan, Vice
President Biden commented, "I commend Secretary Geithner and the Treasury
Department for moving quickly to implement these innovative programs to help
underserved communities. They are exactly what the President and I had in
mind when we put forth the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act."
Within just 120 days of the Recovery Act's enactment, the CDFI Fund awarded
a total of $98 million in financial assistance grants through the CDFI
Program and Native American CDFI Assistance Program. Subsequently, 100
percent of the funds were disbursed within 60 days of the award
announcement, enabling CDFIs to quickly expand lending activities. In
addition, the CDFI Fund solicited and reviewed an aggregate total of over
200 new applications received under supplemental rounds of the CDFI and NACA
Programs. Earlier this week, we announced the award recipients of $4.4
million through the NACA Program, and $52.7 million will be awarded later
this week through the CDFI Program. The CDFI Fund also re-opened the 2008
New Markets Tax Credit Program application round to award an additional $1.5
billion of Recovery Act allocation authority within 100 days of enactment,
and closed all of the award agreements within 30 days of the award
announcement. An additional $5 billion in New Markets Tax Credits for the
2009 round will be announced next month.
As significant as they were, our achievements did not come as a surprise to
me because I know better than anyone the story of our staff's unparalleled
level of commitment. Since I became Director two years ago, the depth of
this commitment has made a strong impression on me. We are engaged in
promoting economic revitalization in distressed communities every day. We
have a shared belief in an America in which all people have access to
affordable credit, capital and financial services. While the economic
crisis worsened, and conditions in communities across the country became
more challenging, our fundamental motivation to provide enhanced support did
not waver - it only increased. The Recovery Act provided us with an
opportunity to rise to the occasion. The President's FY 2010 budget, which
will provide the CDFI Fund with even greater resources and programs, will
allow us to continue to fulfill our mission and further impact distressed
communities throughout the nation.
Our contribution to combating the economic crisis was not limited to
awarding funds. As the crisis deepened last fall, we took immediate action
to explore with our Community Development Advisory Board how the CDFI Fund
could best respond to the crisis. The Advisory Board Subcommittee helped us
gain a better understanding of the impact the economic downturn is having on
the CDFI industry, and how we can best serve our industry and the
communities we serve.
The Subcommittee gathered input from a wide representation of the community
development finance industry and formulated important recommendations that
were presented to the full Advisory Board and the CDFI Fund on March 5,
2009. The CDFI Fund has made notable progress in implementing these
recommendations, the positive effects of which will be felt throughout the
community development industry. From increasing the capacity of new and
existing CDFIs, to expanding training and outreach activities through a
newly created office, to enhancing affordable housing finance by securing
direct funding for the new Capital Magnet Fund, the hard work of the CDFI
Fund staff continues to advance economic recovery in distressed communities
in diverse ways.
Throughout this past fiscal year and the economic crisis, the staff of the
CDFI Fund has demonstrated a level of commitment which I cannot praise too
strongly or too effusively. Many have made personal sacrifices over the
days, weeks and months in which we worked together toward America's economic
recovery. I commend their exemplary dedication to serving those communities
most in need of economic recovery and revitalization. As federal employees,
they continue to uphold with their example the finest traditions of public
service.

Subject: [CircleUp] Open house for Heart of America Indian Center 10-16-09
Message-ID:
September 29, 2009
NEWS
For Immediate Release
Contact: Cheyanne Ingram, 816-421-7608, clingram at haicindian.com
Heart of American Indian Center: Home Away from Home
October 16, 3-7 p.m. Open House Welcomes the Community
KANSAS CITY, MO ? Cheyanne Ingram?s face is the face of the future at
Heart of America Indian Center ? and that future is bright. ?We?re sprucing
the place up for our open house,? she smiles, brushing a strand of glossy
hair from her forehead. Around her, volunteers splashed with various paint
colors bustle about ? cleaning, spackling, painting ? to prepare for the
October 16 event. ?We?ve been around for so long, but many people don?t
even know we?re here. When we invite the community back, we want it to look
nice.? Ingram, the vibrant, young Executive Director of the Center, turns
back to her work, dark eyes reflecting the fresh color livening the walls.
Since 1974, the Heart of America Indian Center has provided health,
welfare, and cultural services to Native American individuals and families in the
Kansas City Metropolitan Area. On Friday October 16, from 3-7 p.m., the
Center will reintroduce itself to the community by hosting an open house
featuring music, food, and artwork to showcase the skills and talents of the
people whom they serve.
?We want the Center to be a place where a person feels welcome,? says
Board Member Teddy Tatum. ?We take people as they are, without any
expectations, and we try to have respect for everyone?s culture.?
But the Center also serves as a home away from home for many displaced
individuals living within the Metro. ?My family is mostly in Minnesota,?
sighs Tatum, a member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa. ?Now this place is
part of my extended family.?
Indeed, the original vision of the Heart of America Indian Center was to
assist those who needed help transitioning from life on the Reservation to
life in an urban setting. But soon, staff and volunteers realized that
Indians already living in the city had other issues that needed to be
addressed, including job training, help in pursuing higher education, emergency
assistance for paying utility bills and medication expenses, and resources for
addiction recovery.
Today, the center provides all of these services and more, partnering with
such community resources as nearby KU Medical Center, as well as Johnson
County Community College, Harvesters, and the Greater Kansas City Community
Foundation.
The Heart of America Indian Center welcomes residents of Kansas City and
neighboring communities to attend their open house on Friday, October 16
from 3-7 p.m. The Center is located at 600 W. 39th Street in Kansas City, MO.
For more information, please call 816-421-7608.
