AmeriCorps volunteers to work in Native Hawaiian communities

HONOLULU, HI -- Six AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA)
volunteers funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service
(CNCS) have been approved for placement in Native Hawaiian community
nonprofits. The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) received its
approval letter from the local field office responsible for national service
programs that includes AmeriCorps VISTA.

"We are pleased to be partnering with an intermediary organization like
CNHA," said Ms. Laurie Cannady, CNCS State Program Director. "The work of
CNHA and its member organizations is exactly the kind of experiences
volunteers are interested in. Spending a year helping families and lifting
up communities is what the AmeriCorps program is all about."

In exchange for one year of service, AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers in Honolulu
County will receive an annual stipend of $14,784, plus health insurance and
a year end educational award of $4,725. Volunteers can also elect to forgo
the educational award and take a payment of $1,200 as a post-service
stipend. CNHA received training on the National Service Corporation in
Texas in April and will be recruiting this summer to fill the six slots
allocated.

"Our plan includes placing some of the AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers with some
of our member organizations," said Robin Puanani Danner, CNHA President and
CEO. "We know that having an extra hand on staff is vital in these tough
times for nonprofits. We are truly grateful to Laurie and the Corporation
for National and Community Service."

The federal stimulus bill included an allocation for the Corporation for
National and Community Service that is above and beyond the program's annual
budget appropriations.

CNHA is a Hawaii-based nonprofit serving a network of more than 100
organizations statewide and nationally. CNHA's mission is to enhance the
well-being of Hawaii through the cultural, economic and community
development of Native Hawaiians. It achieves its mission through policy
advocacy, community convening, leadership development, training and
technical assistance, and linking resources and solutions to community
challenges.
