With funding provided by the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB Des Moines), Oweesta is awarding the second year of the South Dakota Native Financial Education Grant. The $2,000 grants go to Native organizations delivering financial education training and/or homebuyer education to Native people in South Dakota. The 2009 recipients are: Oglala Sioux Tribe Partnership for Housing, on the Pine Ridge Reservation; Four Bands Community Fund on the Cheyenne River Reservation, and Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Financial Education Initiative, on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. "Oweesta would like to thank FHLB Des Moines for providing the funding that will enhance financial education and homebuyer education, which are vital elements in building strong Native communities," said Tracey Fisher, Interim President and CEO of Oweesta. "For example, these funds will assist Standing Rock with expanding services to include financial education. This will assure that their clients are ready to take advantage of existing business development products and services offered at their Entrepreneurial Centers. " Generally, grant recipients will use the awards to upgrade their computer and impact data tracking systems, offer additional financial education workshops, purchase course materials and increase their outreach efforts. The first round of grants, given out in 2008, enabled at least 120 adults and middle and high school students to participate in financial education and home buyer education courses. "We are very pleased with the positive impact this program has had in South Dakota," said David Fleming, Manager of Lending and Capitalization at Oweesta. "Among other benefits, this year's funding will help expand services into remote areas of the state. For example, financial education courses will be taught in more remote districts of the Pine Ridge Reservation, including Oglala, Porcupine, and Wakpamni." For more information about these grants or Oweesta's other lending and grant programs, please visit www.oweesta.org or contact David Fleming at (605) 342-3770 or David at oweesta.org. ### About Oweesta Oweesta (http://www.oweesta.org) is a certified Native CDFI intermediary, providing Native communities with loans, investments, technical assistance, training and community development information. Message-ID: <000c01c9f5e0$d25deca0$7719c5e0$@org> Forward from OFN - Native Initiatives are being recommended at the $10 million level in this budget, up from previous years! Good news. Also, attached summary of the regulatory and enforcement system overhaul for the financial services industry. ---- Today the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee recommended that the CDFI Fund receive $243.6 million in FY2010-the same level that President Barack Obama recommended in his budget proposal! This Congressional endorsement of the President's proposal is good news; this recommendation will next be considered by the full House Appropriations Committee. Senate appropriators have yet to act. Subcommittee Chairman Jose Serrano (D-NY) said in his opening statement, "the bill supports the Presidents request of $244 million for the CDFI Fund, which helps supply credit to disadvantaged communities. The funding in this bill will allow community development banks, credit unions and others to help fill the void that has resulted from the overall decline in bank lending activity. On average each dollar invested in the CDFI fund has leveraged 15 dollars in additional private investment in underserved communities. Within this total, $80 million is provided to jump start the Capital Magnet Fund, a new competitive grant program for CDFIs and nonprofit organizations to work on affordable housing." Appropriations is not all that's going on in Washington. Last week, the U.S. Department of the Treasury released a proposal to overhaul the regulatory and enforcement system governing the financial services industry. The attached summary prepared by OFN highlights the aspects of the proposal most relevant to CDFIs. As always, thank you for your help and support of OFN's policy efforts. The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) received its approval letter from the local field office responsible for national service programs that includes AmeriCorps VISTA. "We are pleased to be partnering with an intermediary organization like CNHA," said Ms. Laurie Cannady, CNCS State Program Director. "The work of CNHA and its member organizations is exactly the kind of experiences volunteers are interested in. Spending a year helping families and lifting up communities is what the AmeriCorps program is all about." In exchange for one year of service, AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers in Honolulu County will receive an annual stipend of $14,784, plus health insurance and a year end educational award of $4,725. Volunteers can also elect to forgo the educational award and take a payment of $1,200 as a post-service stipend. CNHA received training on the National Service Corporation in Texas in April and will be recruiting this summer to fill the six slots allocated. "Our plan includes placing some of the AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers with some of our member organizations," said Robin Puanani Danner, CNHA President and CEO. "We know that having an extra hand on staff is vital in these tough times for nonprofits. We are truly grateful to Laurie and the Corporation for National and Community Service." The federal stimulus bill included an allocation for the Corporation for National and Community Service that is above and beyond the program's annual budget appropriations. CNHA is a Hawaii-based nonprofit serving a network of more than 100 organizations statewide and nationally. CNHA's mission is to enhance the well-being of Hawaii through the cultural, economic and community development of Native Hawaiians. It achieves its mission through policy advocacy, community convening, leadership development, training and technical assistance, and linking resources and solutions to community challenges.
