(please forward)
I just received an email this morning from one of my friends at the
Houma Nation and I felt the need to send this out. Once again the Houma
people of Louisiana have been hit by hurricane flooding and wind damage,
but there has not been much relief or press coverage of their situation.
Having visited the area a couple of times personally since Katrina/Rita,
I can tell you that communities were still struggling to overcome that
damage. And now Gustav has made his presence known. Most of the
articles that I have seen, including in Indian Country Today, have
covered the Chitimacha Tribe and their encounter with Gustav, which was
pretty devastating and they do need help.
The Houma people did not receive the attention and the help I felt they
should have 3 years ago and now they are back in that same position.
Please, donate what you can personally, from your tribe or Native
community, from your nonprofit, from wherever you may be from - every
little bit helps. Here is the link to the Houma site and the donations
request page: http://www.unitedhoumanation.org/?q=node/11 - this is
updated regularly, as is the regular update from the Principal Chief,
Brenda Dardar Roubichaux, found here:
http://www.unitedhoumanation.org/?q=node/74. There is an update from
yesterday.
As I said in news articles and email blasts in prior years, these are
resilient, but struggling communities of Native people, WITHOUT the
destruction of the hurricanes. Please forward this to all you can. I
hear of the damage from Gustav in the communities and parishes I worked
in and visited, and my heart goes out to them.
Thanks in advance for your attention to this.
